Nolichucky Ridge Cliff (Cliff Ridge) Hike

Views of the Nolichucky River from Cliff Ridge

— 3 miles out & back — 1.5 hours — Moderate — 530 ft. Elevation gain

When we are looking for a fast, relatively easy hike, not too far off the interstate, the Nolichucky Ridge Cliff Hike (or Cliff Ridge, as we call it) is always the one we default to. In about a mile and a half on the Appalachian Trail (AT), you can reach amazing views of the Nolichucky Gorge. If you’re lucky, you may even spot a train passing through, or some rafters or kayakers floating down the river as you enjoy the view! If you go in mid-June, you may even see the mountain laurel blooming!

Getting There

From I-26

  • Take Exit 40 onto Jackson-Love Highway and head towards the gas station and hospital (towards town)
  • Shortly after (about 900 ft.), turn right onto Temple Hill Road
  • In 0.8 miles, turn left onto River Road
  • In a half mile, reach a 4-way stop, after going over several speed bumps with beautiful river views on your left
  • Go straight through the stop sign and use the small pull-off on the right for about 4 cars.
    • If this lot is full or your car won’t appreciate the slight drop-off, there is parking on the other side of the bridge, across the road from the church. After crossing the bridge, turn right heading towards USA Raft outpost.

The Hike

If you started in the 4-car parking area, the trail to Nolichucky Ridge Cliff will immediately begin it’s ascent from here (at the far end of the parking area from the 4-way stop. If you had to start in the other parking area, walk back over the bridge to the main parking area at the 4-way stop. This trail will follow the white Appalachian Trail blazes for the entirety, but trail is pretty easy to follow.

This trail winds its way up the mountain using a lot of switchbacks. It’ll pass through some lovely rhododendron patches/tunnels on the way, which are particularly beautiful when in bloom.

View of the AT

After about 1.5 miles of fairly continuous slow climb, you’ll start to get some views. There are a few smaller overlooks along this ridge, but you’ll know when you reach the main overlook, which has a straight-on view of the Nolichucky River, with a picturesque train bridge crossing it.

Once you’ve enjoyed the view and snack, return the way you came. Once back at the trailhead, make sure to take a pit stop at Uncle Johnny’s Hostel store. They have a unique selection of trail gear and snacks, as well as accommodations for the section- and thru-hikers.
