Little Rock Knob is Andy’s favorite hike in our region, specifically in the fall. The 2022 fall colors and temperatures has been like no other in the five years we’ve lived here, so we had to make the trip out! The trail starts at Hughes Gap in Unicoi, TN and follows the Appalachian Trail for about 2.25 miles before leading to a rocky opening with 180 degree views of the valley below. Despite this trail being easy to moderate and the beautiful views, the only hikers we have passed have been section hikers or through hikers. This is a super accessible day hike and I would recommend it to almost everyone! We visited on a cloudy day, so the colors weren’t as vibrant, but it was a great hike nonetheless.

Getting There

From I-26

  • Take exit 32 and drive towards Unicoi
  • At the stop sign, turn right onto Unicoi Dr.
  • After about a mile, turn left onto TN-107 E
  • Continue on this road for about 14 miles
  • Turn left onto Hughes Gap Rd.
  • After about 4 miles, the parking area for Little Rock Knob will be on the left. There is room for about 5-6 cars if you park perpendicular to the road or at an angle.

The Hike

The Appalachian Trail crosses the road at Hughes Gap, but your start will be on the same side of the road as the parking area. The path is pretty straightforward, make sure you follow the white blazes and you will get to Little Rock Knob easily! Follow the trail for about 2.25 miles through the forest and enjoy the trees, mushrooms, and rock formations. As you get towards the top, you will have some small views through the trees. Little Rock Knob will be on the right side of the trail, there is another smaller opening right before, but keep going, the views will soon open up on the right! Enjoy some water and a snack and take in those views! When you’re ready, follow the AT back to the parking area.
